"The Society" was formed after a disastrous encounter with The Thrum on Anacostine Island in 1668. Comprised of people of privilege and power, The Society used its influence to subtly alter the plans for Washington DC, using the capitol city itself to reinforce the mystical seals binding The Thrum. Initially triumphant and effective, The Society has grown complacent and out of touch over the years. Only through the heroism of its often ill-chosen recruits is The Thrum held at bay.

Trapped within the Earth, the ancient, ineffable Thrum struggles against its bonds. Though trapped, its influence extends into our world, twisting the wills of those around it. The Hittites, the Minoans, the Romans, the Olmecs, all have fallen prey to the power of The Thrum. Kind and well-meaning leaders, the likes of Caligula and Torquemada, have been tortured and transformed into the tools of its depravity. Though Mankind has managed to win battles against The Thrum, the war continues on.

The Dead-Butantes are a group of lovely young ladies who have unfortunately died before their time. Brought back to life through the power of Elan Vital, the elixir of life, they serve as the elite fighting force of The Society. Though their various states of decomposition may cause their intelligence, reason, and ability to hold a conversation to differ, their manners and sense of entitlement make them formidable foes. Marie Dupois is the latest member of the team.
